Appalachian Heirloom Plant Farm

Appalachian Heirloom Plant Farm is located  in the gently rolling hills of Adams County in south central Ohio and is owned by Tony and Mary West.  We are dedicated to the preservation, education and use of heritage food crops from the Appalachian region. This region has a wealth of genetically diverse food crops not seen elsewhere. There are literally hundreds of unique family varieties of tomatoes, beans, corn and other crops that have been passed down thru the generations but are otherwise unknown. We are not a large operation nor are we a large seed company.  We are a genetic resource for plant breeders, historians and hobbyist.  All work is done by ourselves.  We have been involved in growing  heirloom crops since the 1990's and are dedicated to the preservation and purity of genetically unique Appalachian crops for future generations to enjoy. Most of what we grow is contracted by small companies.

Each spring from April thru June, we offer a wide variety of Heirloom Tomato seedlings along with other bedding plants.  Each year we have over 40 unique varieties of Heirloom Tomato seedlings such as Black Mountain Pink, Grant County Pink, Granny Cantrell, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Vinson Watts, Virginia Sweets, Tiffen and many others.

We use low impact farming practices which includes adding compost, manure and natural mulch materials to our growing beds.  In the fall we plant cover crops (usually wheat) and use a large amount of leaf litter on the beds. Synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are used very little and many of our crops receive none of these at all. We use no "restricted use" chemicals on our farm.

We are in the process of renovating our 100 year old barn.  Renovations started in 2012 and will continue thru 2015 or 2016 as time and funds are available.  Barn improvements include running water, all new wiring, new floor and significant structural changes and improvements.  Other farm improvements and changes include a small vineyard installation over the next 3 to 4 years and drainage improvements.  Donations are welcome to help with these improvements.
